Change from DHCP to Fixed IP and Gateway Address

For greater flexibility, users running a local web server or ftp server will likely need to change how your router directs internal network traffic to your local area network's computers and devices. To do so, change the normal DHCP-assigned automatic IP address to a "fixed" IP address. First, assign a "valid" IP address number. ( How to Find and View with Windows 7 Example )

Step 1 - 9 as shown in image below:

  1. On the right side of the Windows Taskbar, click the Internet Signal Bar icon.
  2. At bottom of the networks popup box, click Open Network and Sharing Center
  3. From the left side menu, click change adapter settings
  4. Double-click your "active" Network Connection (wired or wireless)
  5. Click on Properties
  6. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4
    • Click on Use the following IP address
    • Change to "valid" IP address ( See example, e.g., 192.168.1.117 )
    • Change Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
    • Change to "valid" Default Gateway - ( examples: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 )

  8. Enter your preferred DNS Server numbers ( Google recommends: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 )
  9. Click OK to finish ( optional: check Validate settings upon exit )
